About

Pitok (Jay) is a visual artist based in Sydney’s inner west. Having graduated from UNSW Art & Design (formerly COFA), they have worked professionally as a graphic designer and more recently began creating personal works using a variety of mediums including gouache, textiles, wood panels and print.

Pitok’s works have been a process of self discovery, reflecting on past experiences that have shaped, limited, damaged, strengthened, destroyed, tempered and ultimately directed the journey of their own self-realisation.

After living in Japan for 3 years, painting was a way of expressing and exercising a sense of identity and culture after returning to Australia. Feeling like a different person in each country they’ve called home, they’ve found it difficult as such to relate back to the realm of Australia’s seemingly obsessive fixation with hyper-masculine culture. Pitok identifies as a non-binary artist.

Pitok draws inspiration from a variety of sources including Australian modernist painters such as Margaret Preston, Arthur Boyd, Japanese wood block prints, tattoo art, pop art, commercial packaging design and also identifies and incorporates kink culture, such as shibari.
